Professional Climb. Welcome to Sa Calobra
One of the Most Iconic European Cycle Routes
Parietti's resident Freerider, Julian - the cycling-photographer, takes on the truly iconic Sa Calobra and puts the Set Yourself Free men's cycling top through its paces.
Antonio Parietti's masterpiece with its 26 hairpin bends and the emblematic tie knot in the shape of a P (for Parietti, surely) draws cycle travel enthusiasts from around the world. In this up close and personal video Julian, on his F7 from Pinarello takes us on a simply stunning ride. Check out below for some of his favourite 'look up' moments and what to watch out for. Did someone say goats!?
In The begining
This climb starts off pretty steady when you go from the restaurant but a word of advice don't burn your matches too soon because you will get eaten by the time you get to the switchbacks, but that being said is super nice you can set into a real nice rhythm and it's a steady gradient all the way up Sa Calobra pretty much until you get to the last sections and then it gets brutal.
Oh My Goat!
There's one thing I can definitely tell you to watch out for in this climb is the goats now I've lived in Mallorca quite a while now and have never been hit by a goat but I've had a fair few mates have had some few scraps with them so if you're ever coming down this climb just keep your wits about you.
Look Up!
This Little Rock thing is about 1 and 1/2k into the ride it's absolutely stunning I have no idea what it's called but I just know every time I come and I see it and I look up, it's just beautiful.
Ride On Through
After that you come into like this beautiful little section where two sides of the rock face are split and you ride on through it and it's just beautiful. Now it stays pretty steady like this for a while obviously like I've said but we're coming up to the Steep sections now and I can already in the distance see the buses.
Beware The Busses
it's one thing I’m definitely going to warn you guys before 11am. the buses are not allowed down here but after, boom, loads, so if you can come and ride this climb before that you're going to have a much better time especially with this peace and tranquillity and that view.
Rise and Grind
This bit's always always the toughest bit for me because there's a load of these little steep switch backs then it goes flat then it goes up again, but you just got to rise and grind to it get in the flow and get going.
Signed P for Parietti
There's another set of switchbacks that leads up to the knot. And the knot we say is the P for Paretti it's not confirmed but nor is it unconfirmed, so who knows but that's the suspected design.
And when he got to the top what did our resident Freerider have to say about his Parietti, men's cycling clothing?
They're a sustainable cycling brand based in Mallorca, they produce everything responsibly and try to be as sustainable as possible throughout their whole manufacturing process and whatever they do business-wise. Check them out, the clothing did amazing sweat wise was great, these honestly I swear to God the most comfiest bibs I've ever been in but yeah just try them out for yourself.”
So there you have it. That's it from Julian for now, if you'd like to see more of him and his fabulous moustache's adventures on Mallorca cycling routes and beyond, check out his Youtube Channel and his Instagram. And maybe we can get him to ride the rest of the Parietti Big 5.
